October Summit: Global Consultation on Patient Empowerment LAICO, October 5 & 6, 2009

Participants activities at WorkshopThis global consultation brought together people from different countries from around the world in various positions in eye care. The structured presentations by the invited faculty including academicians, health economists, ophthalmologists etc. helped to sensitise these representatives from the eye care world on the perspective of the patient. The participant discussions helped to arrive at an understanding of this new concept. They also were able to produce strategies that would enable patient empowerment both within the eye care delivery system as well as to empower the community to demonstrate better health seeking behavior. A panel discussion of representatives of different stakeholders in eye care helped to give the audience each ones perspective.

  • Dr.Ruhul Amin & Dr.MD. Badiujjaman participated in a workshop on Patient Empowerment Strategies during the October Summit at Aravind. Dr. Amin also participated in the Influencing Skills workshop.

  • Ophthalmologist Dr. Ehasan participated in an Influencing Skills workshop organized by Aravind with Seva co-sponsorship during the October Summit in Madurai.

Evidence Based Management Practices October 4-5

Participants at Evidence based management practices workshopThe workshop is designed to enhance management practices in eye care institutions - to promote the culture of evidence  based decision making. Dr. Nirmala Murthy, President - Foundation for Research in Health Systems, Ahmedabad, Mr. D. Nagarajan, Consultant, Hyderabad, Mr. Ravi Sunderrajan, Controller, Citrix Systems, Inc, Bangalore, Mr. J. Sundaresan, Senior Manager, ST Ericsson India Pvt Bangalore, Mr. N. Krishnamoorthy, President - T V Sundram Iyengar & Sons Limited, Madurai, Mr. K. Chandrasekhar, Chief Executive Officer, Forus Health Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore were the guest faculty for the workshop. A total of 43 participants from India, Nepal, Cameroon, Uganda and Bangladesh attended.

Mr. Mainul, Manager Grameen GC Eye Hospital, Barisal & Mr. Suzon, IT Executive, participated in the workshop: Evidence-based Management Practice, which was organized by Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology (LAICO) during October 4th & 5th as part of the October Summit. These two staff members were particularly interested in the use of data to improve the running of the hospitals and gain tools which they are now applying.

Barisal Work Shop

During January, Seva expert volunteer ophthalmologist Dr. Richard Litwin and Mrs. Judith Litwin visited GHS in Dhaka and participated in a staff development workshop at Barisal with Grameen leaders and staff of the Bogra and Barisal eye hospitals. Dr. Asim Sil, Chief Medical Officer of Vivekananda Mission Netra Niramay Niketan, also served as a resource person for this workshop on increasing patients screened and operated at the eye hospitals. Dr. Litwin shared his observations of the hospital and the tremendous potential he saw, based on his thirty years of volunteering with Seva to strengthen rural eye hospitals in South Asia. These discussions also included Mr. Md. Sultan and Mr. Ashaduzzaman, Advisor to Grameen Health Services.Very recently, Mr. Ashaduzzaman was appointed Managing Director of GHS.

MLOP TRAINER TRAINING PROGRAM

Mr.Glyn Walsh, a renowned optimetrist of Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK, had Visited Grameen Health Care Services Ltd. to observe its Eye Hospitals and to know how GCU department of vision science might be able to support the MLOP Training Project operating by GHS in its Grameen GC Eye Hospital, Bogra. For this purpose Dr. Glyn had visited GHS's eye hospital of Bogra and decided to arrange one week workshop on Training from 01/06/13 to 06/06/13 for the trainers at Grameen Bank Complex, Mirpur-2,Dhaka. From this workshop the senior MLOPs are taught how they can teach the trainee MLOP trained in GHS's hospitals. Basically the workshop is all about on MLOP training project development Programe .
